Yoshihiro Suda – Camelia

January 10 - February 21, 2009

With the solo exhibition "Camelia" Loock Galerie is pleased to present new works of the Japanese artist Yoshihiro Suda in the Halle am Wasser.

The Japanese artist Yoshihiro Suda, known for his wooden sculptures of life-size flowers and plants, refers in his work to the Japanese term "ma". This term encompasses a spectrum of meanings from "nothing", "in between", "relationship", "void", to "something".  In an almost zen-like way, he stages his sculptures in the exhibition space and directs our attention to the fact of overlooking something. He places the false botanical objects in unexpected places, one could say that he hides them to send us on a treasure hunt. In an overwhelming way, Suda has mastered the sculptural means already found in antiquity, drawing on the traditional and timeless flower theme, but his positioning in contemporary art is unmistakable. The innovation lies in the subtle placement of his works, the minimalism of colour, which, in the spatial environments created by Suda, develops an effect that is both calming and surprising. It is the place where nature is one with art and where simple beauty is found in ordinary things.

The works of Yoshihiro Suda have been shown in recent years at the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg; Städel Museum Frankfurt; Lenbachhaus Munich, Fondation Beyerle, Basel; Louisiana Museum, Copenhagen. Permanent installations can be seen in the Neues Museum, Nuremberg and in the Art House Project "Gokaisho" in Naoshima.
